Typically enjoyed by four players in fixed partnerships, with partners sitting opposite each other, 29 utilizes 32 cards from a standard 52-card deck. The game uses the traditional "French" suits: hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades, with each suit comprising eight cards. The hierarchy within each suit ranks from high to low as follows: J-9-A-10-K-Q-8-7. The objective is to capture tricks that contain high-value cards.
The scoring in 29 is based on the following card values:
- Jacks: 3 points each
- Nines: 2 points each
- Aces: 1 point each
- Tens: 1 point each
- Other cards (K, Q, 8, 7): no points
This sums up to a total of 28 points from the cards. In some versions, an additional point is awarded for the last trick, bringing the total to 29 points, which explains the game's name. However, many modern players omit the point for the last trick, yet the game retains its name as 29.
Traditionally, the Twos, Threes, Fours, and Fives, which are excluded from the deck, serve as trump indicators, with each player receiving one card of each suit. Meanwhile, the Sixes are employed to keep score, with each partnership using one red and one black Six for this purpose.
