Amazon Ends Wheel of Time Series on Prime Video After Three Seasons, Story Unfinished

The Wheel of Time, the beloved fantasy series on Prime Video, has come to an abrupt halt with Amazon deciding not to renew it for a fourth season after the conclusion of Season 3. According to Deadline, this decision came after extensive deliberations, with executives appreciating the show but ultimately finding it financially unfeasible to continue.

Based on the acclaimed book series by Robert Jordan, The Wheel of Time features a talented cast led by Rosamund Pike. The first two seasons faced backlash from fans due to significant deviations from the source material. However, Season 3 managed to win back the majority of the fanbase and set the stage for even more exciting developments. The show's cancellation has left fans disappointed, especially given the vast amount of story yet to be told. Many feel that The Wheel of Time was just beginning to hit its stride.

Financial considerations appear to be the primary reason for the cancellation. Co-produced by Sony Pictures TV and Amazon MGM Studios, the latter of which also produces the costly The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, The Wheel of Time was deemed too expensive to continue. As reported by Deadline, "the Season 3 overall performance was not strong enough compared to the show’s cost for Prime Video to commit to another season and the streamer could not make it work after examining different scenarios and following discussions with lead studio Sony TV, sources said."

IGN's review of The Wheel of Time Season 3 gave it an impressive 8/10, stating, "The Wheel of Time finally achieves its full potential in season 3, which is filled with rich characters finding their place in Robert Jordan’s complex fantasy world."

While the TV adaptation of The Wheel of Time has ended, fans can look forward to a new 'AAA Open-World RPG' in development. IGN interviewed iwot Studios, the rights holder of The Wheel of Time, to learn more about this upcoming game.
