Avowed's Character Creation: A Deep Dive into Backgrounds
Avowed boasts a rich character creator, allowing players to customize their character's appearance and select a Background that shapes their backstory and narrative. This guide details each Background and its impact on gameplay.

Avowed offers five distinct Backgrounds: Arcane Scholar, Court Augur, Noble Scion, Vanguard Scout, and War Hero. While each provides unique dialogue options and a starting weapon (all common-quality, one-handed melee weapons), all equipment and abilities remain accessible regardless of choice.
Background Details:
Arcane Scholar: This scholarly character hails from Bragganhyl Academy, their treatise on soul lineages causing conflict with a local lord. Imprisoned, they were later recruited by the emperor. Expect dialogue options reflecting knowledge of the occult, law, history, and poetry.
Court Augur: This Background features a tragic past, their mystical insights leading to suspicion and exile after a village crop failure. The emperor later appointed them as their personal mystic. Expect dialogue reflecting spiritual awareness and interactions with magic and the Gods. Ideal for players envisioning a wizard-like character, aligning well with the companion Giatta.
Noble Scion: A product of noble birth, wealth, and poor morals, this character's family crumbled due to scandal. Seeking the emperor's favor, they now serve as a valuable ally. A good choice for players aiming for imperial loyalty.
Vanguard Scout: Spared from execution, this character's humble beginnings led them to a life in the wilderness. Their tracking and spying skills make them a valuable asset to the empire. Suitable for players preferring a hunter-style playthrough and potentially aligning with the companion Marius.
War Hero: This character's role in quelling a Skaenite uprising earned them a place among elite warriors. Loyalty and grit are their hallmarks, making them a valuable asset to the emperor. A strong choice for players wanting a warrior archetype and potentially connecting with the companion Kai.
Starting Weapons:

Each Background starts with a common-quality, one-handed melee weapon found near a shipwreck during the "On Strange Shores" quest:
Ultimately, the best Background depends on your preferred roleplaying style and desired narrative. The starting weapon's low quality ensures it will be quickly replaced, making Background choice primarily about narrative immersion.
