Localthunk, creator of the hit roguelike poker game Balatro, has intervened to address controversy in the Balatro subreddit regarding a moderator's stance on AI-generated artwork.
Here's what unfolded, as first reported by Garbage Day and Rock Paper Shotgun: Former r/Balatro moderator DrTankHead, who also runs an NSFW Balatro community, initially permitted AI art in both forums. "Properly labeled AI content won't be banned here," the moderator stated, claiming this decision followed discussions with publisher Playstack.
Localthunk quickly responded on Bluesky, clarifying neither the developer nor Playstack endorsed AI imagery before addressing the subreddit directly: "We condemn AI 'art.' I don't use it in my work, and believe it actively harms artists. This moderator's actions misrepresented our position and they've been removed."
The developer announced new policies: "Effective immediately, this subreddit prohibits AI-generated images. We'll update our rules and FAQ accordingly."
Playstack's communications director later acknowledged unclear guidelines, noting the "no unlabeled AI" rule could imply acceptance. The remaining moderation team plans to revise the wording.
In the NSFW Balatro community, DrTankHead confirmed their removal from r/Balatro while suggesting potential designated days for non-explicit AI art - prompting one user to reply: "Maybe take a Reddit break."
The AI controversy reflects broader industry tensions as gaming and entertainment sectors grapple with workforce reductions. Ethical concerns persist despite corporate enthusiasm, evidenced by Keywords Studios' failed AI-only game experiment where the technology proved "unable to replace talent." Nevertheless, major publishers like EA and Capcom continue AI initiatives, with Activision facing backlash for using generative AI in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 assets.
