Steam Player Count Surges After Patch 8 Release

Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has rolled out its much-anticipated final patch, marking the end of its epic journey. Launched on April 15, 2025, by Larian Studios, Patch 8 has not only concluded the game’s development but also sparked a notable increase in player engagement. Prior to the update, BG3 hovered around 60,000 concurrent players on Steam. Post-release, the game has seen its player count soar to over 169,000, positioning it just outside Steam's top 10 most played games.

Larian Studios' CEO, Swen Vincke, celebrated the player surge on Twitter (X) on April 22, attributing it to the game's robust mod support. This support allows Larian to shift focus to their next project. It was earlier announced that Larian Studios will move away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) universe to explore new ventures.

In light of this, D&D's parent companies, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, will continue the Baldur’s Gate franchise independently. They are currently engaging with other studios to potentially develop Baldur’s Gate 4.

Patch 8, first announced in November 2024 via a Steam blog post, has been eagerly awaited by the community.
