Nintendo shared comprehensive details about the Switch 2 during its April Direct, and fans are eagerly awaiting U.S. preorders. While the console's price aligned with expectations, the launch pricing for first-party Switch 2 games raised eyebrows—most notably Mario Kart World at $80. Additionally, Nintendo unveiled upgraded Switch 2 accessories priced higher than their original Switch counterparts, with costs increasing further since the initial announcement.
Among these accessories, the Switch 2 Pro Controller stood out at $85, prompting concerns for owners of existing Switch Pro controllers. Fortunately, Nintendo confirmed backward compatibility—original Switch Pro controllers will work seamlessly with the Switch 2.

While some may opt for the newer Switch 2 Pro controller, most won't require an upgrade. Existing Switch Pro controllers remain fully functional, saving players $80 for new games. For those needing a controller, the original remains a budget-friendly choice at $69.99.
Retailers may phase out legacy controllers ahead of the Switch 2 launch—Amazon already faces stock shortages, offering third-party alternatives. Alongside Pro controllers, Nintendo confirmed Joy-Con compatibility, though the Pro controller remains our top recommendation for most games.

The Switch 2 Pro controller launches alongside the console on June 5. Preorders for both should begin April 24. Note: This controller exclusively supports the Switch 2 and won't function with original Switch consoles.
Walmart and Best Buy have listed the Switch 2 Pro controller without confirmed preorder dates. Walmart's listings also include upcoming Switch 2 game preorders.
