The upcoming remake of Retro Studios' 2010 Wii platformer, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, is facing backlash from fans over its price point. This latest port to Nintendo Switch is set for release on January 16, 2025, by Polish studio Forever Entertainment S.A. While pre-orders are open on the Nintendo eShop, the $60 price tag has sparked considerable debate online.

Reddit discussions highlight the perceived high cost, with many comparing it unfavorably to other Nintendo remasters, such as the $40 Metroid Prime remaster. However, counterarguments emphasize Donkey Kong's historically stronger sales figures and broader brand recognition, boosted by appearances in the successful Super Mario Bros. Movie and the upcoming Donkey Kong Country-themed area at Universal Studios Japan (delayed to late 2024).

Donkey Kong's enduring popularity, spanning 43 years since his creation by Shigeru Miyamoto, is undeniable. Previous Switch remakes of Donkey Kong titles, including Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, have achieved significant sales success, mirroring the strong performance of classic Donkey Kong games on SNES and N64.

Despite the price controversy, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, weighing in at 9 GB (significantly larger than the Tropical Freeze remake), is anticipated to follow in the footsteps of its successful predecessors. The game's substantial size and the franchise's established popularity suggest a potentially strong market performance, regardless of the initial negative reaction to its pricing.
