Herschel "Guy" Beahm IV, known online as Dr Disrespect, has acknowledged inappropriate messaging with a minor, confirming the reason behind his Twitch ban. This revelation sheds light on his 2019 departure from the platform, ending years of speculation. The streamer's admission follows a June 21st Twitter post by former Twitch employee Cody Conners alleging Dr Disrespect's permanent ban stemmed from "sexting a minor" via Twitch Whispers, a now-defunct private messaging service.
Initially denying wrongdoing and citing a settled agreement, Dr Disrespect subsequently issued a detailed statement on June 25th. He admitted to engaging in inappropriate conversations with a minor via Twitch Whispers in 2017, emphasizing that while the interactions were inappropriate, there were no malicious intentions and no in-person meetings occurred. This contradicts Conners' claim that the messages aimed to arrange a meeting at TwitchCon. The statement, viewed millions of times within hours, drew criticism for initially omitting the mention of a "minor," a detail later restored.
The statement also addressed Dr Disrespect's departure from Midnight Society, the game development studio he co-founded. While Midnight Society cited a need to uphold its principles in announcing the termination of their relationship, Dr Disrespect characterized the decision as a mutual, albeit painful, one, offering apologies to his staff, community, and family.
Despite the controversy, Dr Disrespect intends to return to streaming after an extended break. He concluded his statement by rejecting the "predator" label applied to him by some online.
