Square Enix has officially announced a prequel Final Fantasy IX picture book, part of the series’ 25th-anniversary celebration. This new release dives into Vivi’s origins with an all-new story. Read on for more details about the anniversary event and exclusive merchandise.
Originally launched on July 7, 2000, Final Fantasy IX continues its 25th-anniversary festivities with the release of a new picture book titled "Vivi and Grandpa: On the Day of Departure." Authored by Event Designer Kazuhiko Aoki and Character Designer Toshiyuki Itahana, this 44-page illustrated prequel delves into the touching backstory of the iconic Black Mage Vivi and his adoptive grandfather, Quan—set before Vivi's journey to the Kingdom of Alexandria.
This project marks the second collaboration between Aoki and Itahana on a Final Fantasy-themed picture book. The pair previously worked on "Chocobo and the Airship," which debuted in Japan in 2021 and later received a global digital release in 2023. "Vivi and Grandpa: On the Day of Departure" is now available digitally and in print via Amazon Japan and Rakuten for 1,320 yen (approximately $9 USD at the time of writing).
Alongside the picture book, Square Enix has rolled out a wide range of Final Fantasy IX-inspired merchandise. While some items are limited to Japan, fans can still access plush toys, apparel like Vivi’s Hat, and a special vinyl album featuring both original and newly recorded tracks through Square Enix’s online store. Additionally, these collectibles are available at the brand’s pop-up shop in Osaka, with another set to open in Tokyo on July 25, 2025.
Adding to the exclusive lineup of merchandise, Square Enix has partnered with Japanese eyewear brand Zoff for a limited-edition Final Fantasy IX eyewear collection. The collaboration includes three distinctive frame designs, each accompanied by themed glasses wipes and custom cases.
Currently, these exclusive frames are available only at select Zoff stores in Japan:
⚫︎ Zoff Grand Tokyo Shibuya
⚫︎ Zoff Ikebukuro Sunshine City Alpa
⚫︎ Zoff Yaechika
⚫︎ Zoff Fukuoka Parco
⚫︎ Zoff Grand Front Osaka
The in-store fitting period will run from July 7 to August 3, 2025. Online reservations for the collaboration are expected to begin in early July. In addition to the eyewear, participating Zoff locations will offer exclusive capsule toys that include collectible glasses wipes. More information regarding availability and store locations will be shared soon via Zoff’s official website and social media platforms.
Although excitement surrounding Final Fantasy IX continues to grow during its milestone anniversary year, there have been no official announcements regarding a remaster or remake. Instead, Square Enix has focused on delivering fresh content and collectibles, giving long-time fans new ways to celebrate the timeless RPG. With the recent release of a newly arranged vinyl album and the launch of a heartfelt picture exploring Vivi’s past, many fans remain optimistic that further surprises may still be on the horizon.
