Exciting developments are stirring among Nintendo fans as new filings suggest the possibility of a new GameCube controller designed for use with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. According to a report from Nintendo Life, a recent FCC filing by Nintendo for a "game controller" aligns with the specifications of the Switch 2, hinting at a wireless Bluetooth controller. Further investigation by the online community at Famiboards indicates that one of the images in the filing shows a label location that matches the back of a GameCube controller, specifically behind the C-Stick.

While this could potentially be a new version of the Switch 2 Pro Controller, the current speculation leans towards its integration with Nintendo’s Switch Online subscription service, which already supports wireless classic controllers for retro games. This has sparked discussions about the potential inclusion of a GameCube library in Nintendo Switch Online, fulfilling long-standing fan requests for GameCube classics on the Switch platform. Although Nintendo has previously focused on re-releasing games from NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and Game Boy on its subscription service, there is now hope that GameCube titles might make a significant return via the Nintendo Switch 2.

Nintendo Consoles

The Nintendo Switch 2 was unveiled earlier in January with a brief trailer that confirmed its backwards compatibility features and the addition of a second USB-C port. However, many details, such as other games and the function of the mysterious new Joy-Con button, remain undisclosed. The Joy-Con mouse theory has gained some traction among enthusiasts. Additionally, a recent Nintendo patent suggested that the Switch 2's Joy-Con controllers could be attached upside down, utilizing gyro mechanics similar to those in smartphones without screen lock. Unlike the original Switch, which used rails for Joy-Con attachment, the new controllers use magnets, allowing them to be attached on either side. This could enhance player customization and potentially introduce new gameplay mechanics.

Analysts predict that the Nintendo Switch 2 could be priced between $400 and $500, with June being mentioned as a possible release month. While there is still much we don't know about the Switch 2, Nintendo has scheduled a Direct for April 2 to reveal more details about the console. In the meantime, fans can enjoy a taste of GameCube nostalgia with Metroid Prime Remastered on the current Nintendo Switch.
