Hyper Light Breaker, the eagerly awaited sequel to the indie hit Hyper Light Drifter, revolutionizes the original game's formula. Transitioning from a 2D pixel art style to a visually stunning 3D environment, this game blends rogue-lite elements with extraction mechanics, diverging from the linear RPG structure of its predecessor. A standout feature is its multiplayer capability, which enhances the gaming experience by allowing players to tackle challenges alongside friends or random players online.
Playing Hyper Light Breaker with friends is not just a feature; it's a core aspect of the game that makes various elements more engaging and manageable. This guide will walk you through setting up co-op sessions with friends and joining public groups for online matchmaking.
To dive into co-op multiplayer with your friends in Hyper Light Breaker, you'll need to create a Private multiplayer room. Once you've spawned into the Cursed Outpost, the central hub of the game, locate the counter to the left of Pherus Bit, your commander, who is positioned just across from the Outpost's entrance.
Approach this counter and press the Interact button (usually R1 or RB) to access the Multiplayer menu. Within this menu, you have the options to "Create Breaker Team", "Join Breaker Team", or check "Invitations". To play with friends, select "Create Breaker Team".
A new menu will appear, allowing you to set a "Password Required" option to "On" and enter a password. After setting up your private Breaker Team, invite up to two friends using your platform's social service, such as PSN, Xbox, or Steam. Hyper Light Breaker supports groups of up to three players.
If your friends are already in-game, they'll receive the invitation in the "Invitations" tab of their Multiplayer menu. Alternatively, they can join through an invitation link sent to them.
Your team may also appear in the general list of Breaker Teams with available slots on the "Join Breaker Team" menu. If other methods fail, your friends can search through this list and join your Private group directly.
Once your friend accepts the invite and enters the correct password, you're all set to embark on cooperative Hyper Light Breaker runs together.
If you're eager to play multiplayer but don't have friends who own Hyper Light Breaker, you can still join the action by participating in public groups. You can create your own public group following the same steps as above, but simply omit setting a password, or you can join an existing public group through the game's matchmaking system.
Navigate to the multiplayer menu at the Cursed Outpost and select "Join Breaker Team". Scroll to the bottom of the screen and choose "Join Random Public Breaker Team".
The game will search through available public, non-password-protected Breaker Teams and assign you to one if available. After a brief loading period, you'll find yourself in the world of the Breaker Team's creator.
To leave a multiplayer session, return to the counter at the Cursed Outpost and open the multiplayer menu. If you're in a session, you'll see an option to disconnect at the bottom of the list. Selecting this will return you to your own world. Alternatively, you can simply exit the game to end the session.
