Exciting news for fans of the iconic RPG series—Suikoden is making a return, albeit in a new form. Konami, in collaboration with MYTHRIL, has unveiled Suikoden STAR LEAP, a fresh mobile RPG designed for Android and iOS devices. This free-to-play game, while without a confirmed release date, is slated to hit the app stores later this year.
For those unfamiliar, the Suikoden series has been captivating gamers since its inception in 1995. Developed and published by Konami, and crafted by the visionary Yoshitaka Murayama, the series draws inspiration from the classical Chinese novel, Water Margin. Known as Suikoden in Japan, the franchise is renowned for its deep narratives steeped in political intrigue, the mystical True Runes, and the legendary assembly of the 108 Stars of Destiny. With 11 entries, including spin-offs, the last installment was released back in 2012. Now, rather than a direct sequel or a full revival, Konami introduces Suikoden STAR LEAP, a mobile game that aims to keep the spirit of the series alive.
Suikoden STAR LEAP ushers in a new cast of characters, yet remains true to the series' hallmark of rallying 108 heroes. Embracing the nostalgia, the game utilizes pixel art to maintain the classic Suikoden aesthetic. Dive into the teaser trailer below to get a sneak peek.
The narrative of Suikoden STAR LEAP centers around the Rune of Change, one of the 27 True Runes that have played a pivotal role in shaping the world. The protagonist, Hou, the son of the village chief, embarks on his journey following his first successful hunt. However, a sudden attack on the village thrusts Hou into a quest for peace, accompanied by Hisui, Shirin, and Shapur. Hisui serves as Hou's emotionally suppressed servant, Shirin, his childhood friend with a staunch sense of justice, and Shapur, a former general now acting as a butler.
While the announcement has stirred excitement, it's not without its detractors. The Suikoden community has been eagerly anticipating a traditional continuation of the series, and the introduction of Suikoden STAR LEAP as a gacha game has sparked mixed reactions. Only time will tell how this new chapter will be received once it's released. In the meantime, keep an eye on the official website for the latest updates.
