MultiVersus, the 2024 free-to-play crossover fighting game, will soon shut down permanently.
Player First Games revealed back in January that MultiVersus Season 5 would be its final season, confirming the game's servers would close on May 30, 2025 at 5pm PDT. Warner Bros. Discovery reportedly considers the title a significant misstep - during a November 2024 earnings call, executives acknowledged the game severely underperformed expectations, resulting in a $100 million write-down for their gaming division. This followed the disastrous launch of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in January, bringing total losses to $300 million.
Merely one month after this announcement, Warner Bros. canceled its Wonder Woman project and closed three development studios: Monolith Productions, WB San Diego, and MultiVersus creator Player First Games.
In a thread titled "MultiVersus shuts down tomorrow - share your final thoughts," hundreds of fans shared their favorite memories.
"MultiVersus was revolutionary - a platform fighter emphasizing aggressive 2v2 gameplay with actual team dynamics," wrote one devoted player. "Beyond gameplay, the voice casting was phenomenal, featuring returning actors like the late Kevin Conroy as Batman, Matthew Lillard as Shaggy, and John DiMaggio as Jake. The character interactions mid-match were brilliant."
"While some roster choices confused me (Ultra Instinct Shaggy?), most move sets showed incredible creativity. There will never be another game quite like this."

"Nothing compares to that beta experience in 2022," another fan recalled. "I got completely addicted to its frenetic pace. When I caught the flu that year, this was all I played. Here's hoping for a revival someday."
"This game holds a special place in my heart, right beside PlayStation All-Stars," mourned one commenter. Another added: "Tom & Jerry's fighting mechanics reignited my passion for the genre - some of the most inventive combat I've experienced."

Some fans maintain hope, though most acknowledge the impracticality of revival given "the licensing labyrinth" involved. A dedicated few attempt to archive the experience before servers go dark.
In IGN's MultiVersus review, we praised its "refreshing team-based combat that excels in online play," awarding it an 8/10.
