Netflix Games subscribers who enjoy playing Grand Theft Auto on Android are facing some upcoming changes. Specifically, Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City will be removed from the Netflix Games catalog next month.
The Reason Behind the Removal
This isn't a sudden decision. Netflix licenses games similarly to films and TV shows, and the licenses for these two GTA titles are expiring. A "Leaving Soon" tag will appear on the games before their removal.
GTA III and Vice City were added to Netflix Games a year ago, reflecting a 12-month licensing agreement with Rockstar Games. Consequently, access for Netflix subscribers will cease on December 13th.
If you're currently playing either game, you'll need to finish up soon. However, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas remains available.
Future Availability
For continued gameplay, both titles are available for purchase on the Google Play Store as part of "The Definitive Editions." Individual games cost $4.99, while the entire trilogy is available for $11.99.
Unlike the previous removal of titles like Samurai Shodown V and WrestleQuest, Netflix is providing advance notice of the GTA games' departure. This is somewhat ironic, considering the trilogy contributed significantly to Netflix Games' subscriber growth in 2023.
Speculation suggests ongoing collaboration between Rockstar and Netflix, potentially leading to remastered versions of Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories, and even Chinatown Wars in the future. This remains unconfirmed, but offers a glimmer of hope for fans.
