Nintendo Removes Game as Switch 2 Backwards Compatibility Updates

Limited Run Games has requested Nintendo to remove the Gex Trilogy from sale on the Nintendo Switch 2 eShop until there's confirmation regarding a patch release to fix backward compatibility issues.

In a social media statement, Limited Run stated it doesn't anticipate the patch being deployed this week due to approval delays linked to yesterday's Juneteenth holiday. Meanwhile, the publisher confirmed it has asked Nintendo to temporarily delist the game.

The company acknowledged encountering Switch 2 backward compatibility problems with multiple titles originally developed for Switch 1. While a recent firmware update improved performance for most games, GEX Trilogy remained affected. Limited Run attempted to resolve this with a patch, which is still awaiting approval.

"Since we lack clarity on when Nintendo's firmware will fix the issue, we submitted our own corrective patch last week," Limited Run explained. "Due to the Juneteenth holiday, approval timelines shifted, but we expect release approval early next week."

"In the interim, we requested Nintendo remove the game from the Switch 2 eShop. We appreciate players' patience as we collaborate with Nintendo on a resolution."

The publisher advised players to verify functionality for other Limited Run titles, listing several confirmed working releases:

  • Clock Tower: Rewind
  • Jurassic Park Classic Games Collection
  • Tomba! Special Edition
  • River City Girls Zero
  • A Boy and His Blob Collection
  • Rocket Knight Adventures
  • Shantae
  • Bill & Ted's Excellent Retro Collection
  • Xtreme Sports
  • Trip World DX
  • Felix the Cat
  • Rendering Ranger R-2: Rewind

Gex Trilogy bundles all three action-platforming adventures featuring the sarcastic gecko protagonist: Gex, Gex: Enter the Gecko, and Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko. Originally launched June 16th for PC, PS5, Xbox Series, last-gen consoles, and Switch platforms, the collection revives a franchise dormant since Square Enix last published entries in 1998-1999.

The Nintendo Switch 2 launch remains strong with 3.5 million units sold, though early sales data indicates third-party game performance varies significantly compared to Nintendo's first-party titles.
