Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090: 32GB GDDR7 Memory and 575W Power Consumption

Leaked specifications reveal the upcoming Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 will feature a substantial 32GB of GDDR7 video memory—double that of the anticipated RTX 5080 and 5070 Ti. This high-performance card will, however, demand a significant 575W power supply. The official unveiling of Nvidia's RTX 50 series, including the RTX 5090, is scheduled for Nvidia's CES keynote on January 6th, 2025.

The RTX 50 series, codenamed Blackwell, represents Nvidia's next-generation graphics card lineup, launching over two years after the RTX 40 series. Building upon its predecessor, the RTX 50 series will leverage proprietary Tensor Cores for AI processing, and incorporate features like DLSS upscaling, ray tracing, and PCIe 5.0 support (on compatible motherboards). This new series will replace the RTX 40 lineup (some models of which, like the RTX 4090D and RTX 4070, have been discontinued), and will directly compete with AMD's Radeon RX 9000 series and Intel's Battlemage GPUs.

Pre-CES leaks, initially reported by VideoCardz, showcased Inno3D's iChill X3 RTX 5090. Images of this three-fan card, occupying over three expansion slots, confirmed the 32GB GDDR7 memory and the hefty 575W power draw—a notable increase from the RTX 4090's 450W.

High Memory, High Cost: The RTX 5090's Power Requirements

The RTX 5090's impressive 32GB GDDR7 memory comes at a cost, both literally and figuratively. The 575W power draw necessitates a high-capacity power supply. While Nvidia remains tight-lipped on pricing, rumored MSRPs suggest a starting price of $1,999 or higher. The RTX 50 series will utilize a 16-pin power connector, though adapters will be provided.

The RTX 5080 and RTX 5070 Ti will be announced alongside the RTX 5090 during Nvidia's CES presentation. The arrival of this new generation will undoubtedly be closely watched by consumers.
