"Oblivion Remastered Fans Praise Bethesda's Pricing, Suggest Nintendo Take Notes"

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has emerged as a focal point in the growing conversation around video game pricing, particularly in contrast to Nintendo’s approach with the Switch 2. Developed by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, Oblivion Remastered goes far beyond a simple visual upgrade. It delivers 4K resolution, 60 frames per second, enhanced combat animations, refined character creation, improved leveling systems, updated menus, new dialogue, advanced lip-syncing, and a fully functional third-person view. These extensive improvements have led many fans to argue that the release qualifies more as a full remake than a remaster—yet Bethesda has clearly outlined why they’ve positioned it as a remaster.

Priced at $50 and including all original DLC, Oblivion Remastered offers a high-value package that stands in stark contrast to Nintendo’s Switch 2 game pricing. This has sparked widespread comparison—and criticism—especially when measured against titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition at $70 and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 at $80. While existing owners can upgrade for $10 or free with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, the base pricing for new buyers has drawn backlash, particularly given the broader trend of $80 price points across multiple Switch 2 titles.

Adding to the frustration, IGN has confirmed that the Switch 2 edition of Breath of the Wild does not include the Expansion Pass. Players who don’t already own the DLC must pay an additional $20 to access it—bringing the total cost for the complete experience to $90. For a game originally released in 2017 on the Wii U, this price hike feels steep to many consumers.

The Switch 2 version of Breath of the Wild does offer improved visuals, performance, achievements, and integration with the new "Zelda Notes" feature in the Nintendo Switch Online app. However, these enhancements are only available through the paid upgrade—existing owners don’t receive them automatically.

In contrast, Oblivion Remastered delivers a near-total overhaul of the original game at half the price of some Switch 2 upgrades, and it’s also available on Game Pass Ultimate. This disparity has fueled online criticism, with many questioning Nintendo’s pricing strategy.

Some fans have taken to Reddit to voice their skepticism, with one user joking, “Nintendo will look at them and say ‘those guys could have made $30 extra.’” Another added, “It's hard for them to learn much of anything over the sound of all that money being printed.”

This sentiment reflects a broader perception: Nintendo is pricing aggressively because it believes its fanbase will pay. As Dr. Serkan Toto, CEO of Kantan Games, told IGN, “Nintendo is charging this price because they feel they can and that people will pay.”
