Paul Rudd Revives 90s SNES Ad for Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo has enlisted actor Paul Rudd to promote the Nintendo Switch 2 in a nostalgic commercial that lovingly recreates his classic 1991 Super Nintendo ad spot - complete with intentionally cheesy '90s aesthetics.

The original Super Nintendo commercial featured a young Rudd sporting a long black trenchcoat, beaded necklace, and decidedly '90s hairstyle as he dramatically hooked up an SNES at a drive-in theater, showcasing games like Zelda: A Link to the Past while excited onlookers gathered. The iconic tagline proclaimed: "Now you're playing with power."

In this playful sequel commercial created for Nintendo Switch 2, Rudd - now looking remarkably similar despite the 34-year gap - once again dons the coat and accessories as he sets up gameplay in a living room alongside comedians Joe Lo Truglio and Jordan Carlos. The spot cleverly winks at its predecessor while introducing modern Switch 2 features like GameChat multiplayer during a Mario Kart session.

The actors poke fun at Rudd's vintage look and '90s commercial antics (including deliberately theatrical fog effects), culminating in Rudd updating his famous line: "Now we're playing together." Though purposefully campy, the callback lands as a charming full-circle moment between consoles generations apart.

IGN recently spoke with Rudd about recreating his Nintendo advertisement experience decades later. The actor recalled likely wearing his own necklace in the original commercial and confessed to playing Mario Kart between takes - though he joked about not getting to keep his Switch 2 demo unit.
