The PlayStation Portal, Sony's innovative handheld companion for PS5 users, has always maintained its original price point, but savvy shoppers can still find excellent deals on pre-owned models. Currently, Amazon Resale (Amazon Warehouse) offers *Used: Like New* PlayStation Portals for just $148, significantly undercutting the retail price of $199—a tidy 26% discount. While a Sony warranty isn’t guaranteed, all Amazon Resale items enjoy the same 30-day return policy as new purchases, adding peace of mind. This item is likely to sell out quickly, so act fast.

Update: The price has dipped further to $150.23, marking the lowest price yet for a Used: Like New unit.

What Is the PlayStation Portal?

The PlayStation Portal resembles an extended DualSense controller equipped with an 8-inch 1080p LCD screen. It transforms your PS5 into a portable gaming device, allowing you to stream games at up to 60fps. It mirrors the DualSense’s advanced features, including haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and a touchscreen interface. The Portal enables streaming games even outside your home, provided you have access to a stable, high-speed internet connection. However, it’s important to note that the PS Portal is not a standalone device—it's designed exclusively as a remote player for the PlayStation 5. Therefore, owning a PS5 is essential for using this accessory.

New Feature: Cloud Gaming Access

Sony recently introduced a feature that lets Portal owners bypass the need for a PS5 entirely. By connecting to Sony’s PlayStation Now cloud streaming service, users gain access to over 120 games, including titles like Ghost of Tsushima, Resident Evil 3 Remake, The Last of Us Part 1 Remastered, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. To access this service, however, you’ll need to subscribe to PlayStation Plus’s premium tier, which costs $18 per month—a far more cost-effective alternative to purchasing games individually.

Comparison to Alternatives

While the PlayStation Portal isn’t the only way to stream PS5 games over Wi-Fi, setting up alternatives like the PS Remote Play app on mobile devices or gaming handhelds like the Steam Deck can be cumbersome. Additionally, these options often lack the full feature set of the DualSense controller. Despite its limitations, the Portal remains the best solution for seamless PlayStation Remote Play experiences.

Review: The Best Current Option

Seth Macy of IGN sums it up best: "The PlayStation Portal is the most surprising device I've ever come away from loving after approaching it with skepticism. It’s leagues ahead of using a phone with a slap-on controller and far superior to what I expected."

He highlights its portability and freedom to play PS5 games anywhere with decent Wi-Fi. However, he notes two notable drawbacks: the absence of a browser-based Wi-Fi login option and lack of Bluetooth audio support. While these issues prevent it from being a perfect device, the PlayStation Portal remains a compelling purchase for PS5 owners who value portability.
