Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 have cemented their status as enduring bestsellers in the gaming world. These titles, part of Rockstar's renowned open-world series, continue to captivate players with their immersive gameplay and high-quality experiences, reflecting the studio's commitment to excellence.
Released in 2013, Grand Theft Auto 5 immerses players in the lives of three protagonists navigating the sprawling, chaotic city of Los Santos. Its initial blockbuster success was amplified by subsequent releases on multiple platforms and the addition of a hugely popular online multiplayer mode, making it one of the best-selling pieces of entertainment media ever. In contrast, Red Dead Redemption 2, launched in 2018, invites players into the rugged landscapes of the Old West through the eyes of outlaw Arthur Morgan, achieving both critical acclaim and commercial triumph.
Despite nearly 12 years since GTA 5's debut and almost seven years since Red Dead Redemption 2's release, both games continue to dominate sales charts. According to PlayStation's December 2024 download chart, GTA 5 secured the third spot among PS5 titles in both the US/Canada and Europe, and fifth place among PS4 titles in the same regions. Meanwhile, Red Dead Redemption 2 topped the PS4 sales in the United States and ranked second in the EU, only surpassed by EA Sports FC 25.
GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 Are Still Topping PlayStation Sales Charts
The European 2024 GSD figures, as reported by VGC, highlight GTA 5's position as the fourth highest-selling game of the year, improving from fifth place in 2023. Similarly, Red Dead Redemption 2 climbed to seventh place from eighth the previous year. These impressive figures underscore the lasting appeal of Rockstar's titles. Take-Two, Rockstar's parent company, recently announced that GTA 5 has surpassed 205 million units sold, while Red Dead Redemption 2 has reached over 67 million copies sold.
The sustained success of these games not only showcases their enduring popularity but also sets the stage for future developments in the franchises. Fans eagerly await the release of Grand Theft Auto 6, rumored to launch later this year, while whispers of a Red Dead Redemption 2 port to the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 add to the excitement.
