IGN Live obtained an exclusive first look at the opening five minutes of SYFY's upcoming series Revival, along with an interview with co-creator Aaron B. Koontz about why this fresh take on resurrection deserves attention.
Premiering June 12 on SYFY, Revival adapts the Harvey Award-nominated comic by Tim Seeley and Mike Norton that published 47 issues between 2012-2017. The exclusive clip introduces "Revival Day" - when the deceased return, though not as traditional zombies but as their former selves.
The series faithfully recreates the comic's iconic opening sequence. "This scene hooked us immediately in the comics," Koontz told IGN. "It sets up mysteries that pay off brilliantly in later episodes. What appears straightforward hides deeper significance."
One standout moment features practical effects rather than CGI - an reanimated corpse breaking free during cremation while engulfed in flames. "We committed to practical effects," Koontz explained. "Though filming in a small town meant medical crews were occupied on set rather than available for emergencies."
The series balances tones masterfully according to Koontz: "We're blending Mare of Easttown's character depth with Fargo's quirky sensibility, plus genuine horror elements. The Cypress family dynamics form the emotional core, introduced through conflict that immediately engages viewers."
Leading the cast is Melanie Scrofano (Wynonna Earp) alongside an impressive ensemble including David James Elliott (JAG) and Steven Ogg (The Walking Dead). The adaptation stays faithful to the source material while expanding its unique mythology.
