Are you eagerly awaiting Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars film? Rest assured, the director behind Deadpool & Wolverine is still on track with the project, and we've received a promising update from the film's writer, Jonathan Tropper. In a recent chat with Screen Rant, Tropper expressed his excitement about the film, hinting that it might hit the screens sooner than fans expect. "I am [excited] too," he said. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."
While details about the movie remain largely under wraps, we know it's set to take place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy provided some insight into its timeline during a February interview with Deadline, stating, "That’s also in the future... It’s all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions Levy's film as the first to delve into the era following The Rise of Skywalker.
Kennedy also confirmed that Levy's Star Wars project will follow the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu in 2026. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she noted. Adding to the excitement, it's reported that Ryan Gosling is set to star in the film.
With Tropper's optimistic words, it seems that progress is being made on Levy's film, though fans will have to wait until at least late 2026, if not 2027, to see it. Disney's last Star Wars film was the critically divisive Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, and since then, several other planned films have been canceled, including projects from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Notably, a Star Wars movie slated for late 2026 was also removed from Disney's schedule in November.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled three new feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni set within his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie helmed by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, featuring Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey post-The Rise of Skywalker.
The New Jedi Order project has undergone several changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight stepping away after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. However, Rey remains a key focus for Disney, as a recent report from THR suggests she will appear in multiple upcoming Star Wars films.
And that's not all Disney has planned for the Star Wars universe. Last year, it was announced that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to write a new trilogy, distinct from the Skywalker Saga as initially speculated.
The next Star Wars content to grace your screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a thrilling triple-episode launch.
