Exciting news for fans of the iconic TV series: Joseph Kosinski, the acclaimed director behind Top Gun: Maverick and Tron: Legacy, is reportedly set to helm a new Miami Vice film for Universal, as per The Hollywood Reporter. This project promises to breathe new life into the classic series that redefined television aesthetics.

Adding to the anticipation, Dan Gilroy, known for his work on Nightcrawler as both writer and director, is tasked with penning the script. Gilroy will build upon an initial draft by Eric Warren Singer, the screenwriter of Top Gun: Maverick. Recently, Gilroy has been contributing to the Star Wars universe, writing for the acclaimed series Andor, created by his brother Tony Gilroy.

Miami Vice, originally an influential NBC police series, was created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by Michael Mann. It ran for five seasons from 1984 to 1989 and starred Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as the charismatic detectives Crockett and Tubbs. The show is celebrated for its groundbreaking approach to visual and auditory storytelling, setting a new standard for television.

The series was previously adapted into a feature film in 2006, directed by Michael Mann and featuring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell in the lead roles. While further details on the new project are scarce at this point, it's clear that Miami Vice won't be Kosinski's immediate next venture, as he is set to release F1 in June. This timeline should afford Kosinski ample opportunity to meticulously craft this much-anticipated revival.
