Russian Checkers 8×8:
In Russian checkers, the game starts with white, and all pieces move on dark squares. Here are the key rules:
- You must capture an opponent's piece if the opportunity is available.
- Captures are allowed both forward and backward.
- Kings can move and capture along any diagonal.
- The Turkish strike rule applies, where you can only capture one of your opponent's pieces per move.
- When multiple capture options exist, you can choose any one, not necessarily the longest.
- A piece reaching the opponent's edge becomes a king and can immediately play as a king if possible.
A draw can be declared in several scenarios:
- If a player has checkers and three or more kings against one of the opponent's kings, and on the 15th move from the established balance of forces, cannot capture the opponent's king.
- In a position where both players have kings and the balance hasn't changed in 30 moves for 4 and 5 piece endings, or 60 moves for 6 and 7 piece endings.
- If a player with three pieces (three kings, two kings and a checker, a king and two checkers, or three simple checkers) against one opponent's king on the "high road" cannot capture it by the 5th move.
- If for 15 moves, only kings are moved without capturing or promoting checkers.
- If the same position repeats three or more times with the same player's turn.
International Checkers 10×10:
International checkers follow a similar but distinct set of rules:
- Like Russian checkers, white begins the game, and pieces move on dark squares.
- Capturing is mandatory and can be done in both directions.
- Kings have the freedom to move and capture along any diagonal.
- The Turkish strike rule is in effect, allowing only one capture per move.
- The majority rule requires capturing the largest number of pieces if multiple capture options are available.
- A regular piece that reaches the opponent's edge during a capture continues moving as a regular piece.
- A piece reaching the opponent's edge by a regular move becomes a king but stops, playing as a king on its next turn.
