The aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights, is a mesmerizing natural spectacle that occasionally graces the night skies over Britain. Once witnessed, it leaves an indelible impression. Aurora Watch UK is your go-to resource for monitoring geomagnetic activity, alerting you when there's a chance to catch this celestial display from the UK.
Stay informed with real-time alerts triggered by changes in the AuroraWatch status level, indicating when the likelihood of viewing the aurora in the UK increases. You can also check the current alert status and review the recent history of the last 24 hours. Additionally, benefit from the 30-minute forecast model provided by the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC).

Please note that Aurora Watch is not designed as a forecasting app. Certain phone settings, such as Battery Saver, may interfere with receiving push notifications, potentially narrowing or closing the aurora alert window. Ensure that notifications for Aurora Watch UK are enabled in your phone's settings to receive timely alerts. The app does not provide historical alerts; if your phone is off or lacks an internet connection when the status changes, but returns to normal before the next data update, you won't receive an alert.
Alerts are sent with a necessary delay as the data needs time to stabilize, as recommended by Lancaster University. Lancaster University's alerts primarily use data from their Lancaster magnetometer, although other locations, such as Shetland, are also monitored. This can result in slightly more 'pessimistic' alerts for those in England, though those further north may have a better chance of sighting the aurora.
The Aurora Watch UK (Android) app, developed and maintained by Smallbouldering Projects, is not an 'official' app. The alerts are provided by Lancaster University, UK, using data from the SAMNET and/or AuroraWatchNet magnetometer networks.
