The Hang is a fascinating musical instrument in the idiophone class, originally crafted in Switzerland. Its unique construction involves two half-shells of deep-drawn, nitrided steel sheet, meticulously glued together at the rim to form a hollow interior, resulting in a striking 'UFO shape'. The upper surface, known as the "Ding," features a central 'note' and is surrounded by seven or eight 'tone fields', each meticulously hammered to produce distinct sounds. Conversely, the bottom, referred to as the "Gu," presents a plain surface with a rolled hole at its center, which, when struck at the rim, produces a tuned note. This instrument is also commonly known as the handpan.
The Hang operates on principles similar to those of the steelpan, yet it is uniquely adapted to function as a Helmholtz resonator. The development of the Hang was the culmination of extensive research into the steelpan and various other instruments, reflecting a deep commitment to innovation in musical expression.
