The creators of Civilization 7 emphasized why seasoned players should complete the tutorial before diving into their first full campaign.
In a Steam announcement, Firaxis Games' creative director Ed Beach shared strategic advice for newcomers to Civilization 7.
"Civilization 7 introduces groundbreaking systems that reinvent our franchise," he explained. "With so many innovations, we've designed guidance to help all players achieve early success."
This primarily refers to Civilization 7's revolutionary Ages mechanic, dividing gameplay across three historical periods: Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern. Each completed Age triggers simultaneous transformations where players select new civilizations, preserve historical advantages, and witness global evolution - an unprecedented feature for the series.
Beach detailed Firaxis's rationale for setting Small maps as default in Civilization 7.
"While veterans enjoy massive battlefields," he noted, "Small maps create ideal learning conditions with three neighboring civilizations and gradual overseas encounters."
"This scale particularly benefits players mastering our revamped Diplomacy system. Managing relationships with fewer competitors helps understand Diplomatic Influence mechanics."
"We suggest Continents Plus maps for new players. Their coastal islands provide accessible naval training crucial for the Exploration Age."
Regarding tutorials, Beach confirmed their automatic activation and persistent value:
"Our contextual tutorial delivers guidance precisely when encountering new mechanics," he clarified.
"Even series veterans should keep tutorials enabled initially. The four specialized Advisors can be selectively activated to prevent information overload."
After proficiency develops, Beach recommended maintaining advisor warnings:
"These notifications prevent empire-threatening mistakes," he revealed. "Our own developers always play with warnings enabled."
Recently, Firaxis unveiled Civilization 7's expansion roadmap during a special livestream (noting Britain's DLC status). The base game launches February 11 across PC, Switch, PS4/PS5, and Xbox consoles, with Deluxe Edition early access starting February 6.
