Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube Controller Limited to Classic Games

Nintendo is bringing GameCube titles to Nintendo Switch Online with the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, accompanied by a new classic controller. However, fine print suggests the new GameCube controller for the Switch 2 is officially designed solely for GameCube games.

Noticed in the UK version of the Switch 2 GameCube controller trailer (credit to VGC), a note states: "The controller is only compatible with Nintendo GameCube - Nintendo Classics." This implies the GameCube controller will function correctly only when playing GameCube titles on the Switch 2 Online Expansion Pack, not other Switch 2 games.

VGC points out that similar disclaimers on other Nintendo controllers haven’t always meant strict limitations. Players have often used retro controllers for other games where feasible. Notably, this disclaimer is absent from the Nintendo of America trailer.

It’s intriguing, as the classic GameCube controller has enough buttons to handle many standard gameplay inputs on the Switch 2. This could be Nintendo managing expectations or preventing issues if someone tries using the controller for unintended purposes, like as a mouse.

Even if this GameCube controller isn’t your preference, Nintendo has confirmed the GameCube Controller adapter will be compatible with the Switch 2 dock via USB. Those who own the adapter from the Wii U era are still getting great value from it.

The classic GameCube controller for the Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch alongside the new console, though pre-order dates remain unconfirmed. Pre-orders have faced challenges due to recent U.S. tariff uncertainties.

This update significantly expands the Nintendo Switch Online library, offering subscribers access to iconic 2000s titles like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Soulcalibur 2, available at launch this summer. The library will grow over time, with teased additions like Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi’s Mansion, Super Mario Strikers, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, and more.
