GTA 6 Mapping Project Surges with Trailer 2: 'Information Overload'

The GTA 6 mapping project has entered a new phase of development following the release of Trailer 2, with one of its lead contributors stating to IGN: “It really changes everything for us for the rest of the year.”

The GTA 6 Mapping Discord is currently experiencing a surge in activity as its current 370 members (nearing 400) dive into the wealth of information provided by the latest trailer. According to Garza, who manages the server, “It’s an information overload — it really changes everything for us for the rest of the year. We have so much new content to work on and we’re really just getting started.”

The GTA 6 Mapping Discord was originally formed after the massive September 2022 leaks — the same ones many suspect Rockstar subtly referenced at the beginning of Trailer 2. The group's mission is to create the most accurate representation of the GTA 6 map possible. Up until now, their efforts were based primarily on those early leaks and December 2023’s Trailer 1.

The previous version of the GTA 6 map, released in March by project leader DuPz0r, is now considered outdated due to the extensive details unveiled in Trailer 2. This fresh wave of official content will enable the team to craft a significantly more refined and detailed map than before.

In addition to confirming plot elements and characters, Rockstar also shared 70 brand-new screenshots of GTA 6 along with visuals of various explorable locations within the fictional state of Leonida — Rockstar’s reimagined version of Florida.

Confirmed locations from this week’s reveal include Vice City (the series’ iconic stand-in for Miami), the tropical island chain known as the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga — a prominent national landmark located near the northern edge of the state.

The team will be meticulously analyzing the trailer to pinpoint the exact placement of every visible location. They’ll also be cross-referencing in-game imagery with real-world counterparts to further refine the accuracy of the GTA 6 map. Once completed, DuPz0r will publish an updated version, offering fans what could be the most comprehensive preview of the game ahead of its May 2026 release date.

Should Rockstar release additional assets or gameplay footage in the future, the community will restart the process all over again. Only once GTA 6 officially launches will the fan-created map be compared to the final product, revealing how spot-on their collaborative effort truly was.

However, there remains a lingering concern that Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, might shut down the project altogether. In March, a modder who created a playable recreation of the GTA 6 map within GTA 5 halted all development after receiving a takedown notice from Take-Two. That mod was built using data from the very same GTA 6 mapping initiative.

When asked last year whether he feared potential legal action from Take-Two, Garza acknowledged having “some mild concern.”

“This project has been running for quite some time without any direct interference with our community,” Garza added. “That said, I always keep in mind the possibility of them reaching out in the future for any reason. We don’t explicitly display leaked material in our map, so I don’t believe they would have grounds to take it down specifically. I think they recognize that this project generates excitement and anticipation for the game, since everyone wants to see how the world might look. That might be why they haven’t taken action yet — because it’s not overly negative. If I ever did receive a cease and desist letter, I would comply respectfully. As our map becomes increasingly precise, it may become more likely that we receive such a notice moving forward.”
