Hideo Kojima, the visionary behind Death Stranding, has officially announced that an anime adaptation of the acclaimed game is currently in development. Continue reading to explore his perspective on video game adaptations and the latest promotional activities for Death Stranding 2.

While plans for a Death Stranding live-action film have been public knowledge for some time, series creator Hideo Kojima has now revealed that an anime version is also on the way. In a recent interview with Vogue Japan on May 28th, Kojima discussed the upcoming film and incidentally mentioned the ongoing work on an anime project.
He expressed his belief that the distinction between video games and cinema will eventually fade, a key objective for his studio. Kojima explained, "If the initial phase of Kojima Productions was about establishing the 'DEATH STRANDING' IP across multiple platforms, including a movie and a sequel, the second phase aims to produce a work where the lines between gaming and filmmaking become completely indistinguishable."

Discussing video game adaptations, he cited examples like "The Last of Us," which prioritized a faithful recreation of the original story, and "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," which leaned more heavily into fan service. Kojima acknowledged the merits of both approaches but stated his ambition is to create a film worthy of accolades at prestigious festivals like Cannes and Venice. He added, "In fact, we are currently developing an anime adaptation."
Although Kojima hinted at the potential for a Death Stranding anime in a September 2024 interview with Variety, this marks the first official confirmation that Kojima Productions is actively working on it. As of now, no additional project details have been disclosed.
In related news, Summer Game Fest (SGF) announced via Twitter (X) on May 27th that Hideo Kojima will be making a stage appearance on June 6th at 2:00 PM PT / 5:00 PM ET / 9:00 PM GMT / 6:00 AM JST. Fans can watch the livestream on SGF’s official YouTube, Twitch, Instagram, TikTok, and X channels.
This presentation is widely expected to focus on the impending release of Death Stranding 2 (DS2), though it would not be surprising if Kojima also provides updates on his other ventures, such as OD and Physint. The focus seems to be on building excitement for DS2, especially following the recent release of a mysterious QR code as part of the game's marketing.
On Reddit, fans have been discussing a new QR code launched by Kojima Productions, which directs users to a video on the game's official website. User soldier_ibra noted that the studio initiated a Pocket Tissue campaign, a popular Japanese marketing tactic where pocket tissue packs include a QR code for consumers to scan.
Kojima personally promoted this on May 23rd, even handing out the pocket tissues to people on the streets of Tokyo. The linked video, titled "Prepper Awaiting Porter," is a brief, uneventful clip set inside a Prepper Shelter. Fans interpret this as classic Kojima promotional flair and anticipate more such videos as the game's release date approaches.
With the launch window closing in, Kojima is actively engaged in promoting the sequel to the celebrated action-adventure title. Death Stranding 2: On The Beach is scheduled for release on June 26, 2025, for PlayStation 5.
