Following the release of *Persona 5 Royal*, Atlus’ *Persona* series has firmly established itself as a cornerstone of the JRPG genre. *Persona 5*, in particular, has reached iconic status, with fans traveling to Shibuya Station in Tokyo to capture the famous scene where the Phantom Thieves hang out above the Shibuya Scramble. Although the area has been remodeled, the iconic angle can still be found.
The journey to this level of success was not immediate. Originating as a spin-off of Atlus' *Shin Megami Tensei* series, the first *Persona* game debuted nearly three decades ago. Despite the numbering, there are actually six mainline *Persona* games, not including numerous spin-offs, remakes, and enhanced editions. It's worth noting that *Metaphor: ReFantazio* is not part of the *Persona* series.
Exploring the 30-year history of the *Persona* franchise is a rewarding experience, although some titles may be harder to access. Here's a guide on where to legally play each of the mainline *Persona* games. You might need to consider purchasing a PSP for some of them.

*Revelations: Persona*, released in 1996 for the original PlayStation, also saw releases on Microsoft Windows and the PlayStation Portable. The game's narrative revolves around characters gaining personas through fortune-telling. The most recent re-release was on the PlayStation Classic in 2018, but there are no versions available on modern hardware. To play, you'll need a physical copy for the PS1, PlayStation Classic, or PSP. Fans are hopeful for a future remastered version from Atlus.

Known also as *Persona 2: Innocent Sin*, this game was initially released for the PlayStation in 1999, but only in Japan. It wasn't until 2011 that a localized version was made available on the PSP for North America and Europe, with a version also on the PlayStation Vita. The story follows a group of high schoolers in Sumaru City battling a mysterious villain named Joker, whose rumors can alter reality. Unfortunately, there's no modern console version available at present.

*Eternal Punishment* is a direct sequel to *Innocent Sin*, released in 2000. Set a few months later, it continues the story of the "Joker Curse" but with a new protagonist, a teenage reporter. It received a simultaneous North American release on the PlayStation and a PSP remake in 2011, which was also available on the PlayStation Network for PS3 in 2013. Like its predecessor, it's not available on modern hardware, but a remastered version could be on the horizon.
