Top horror studio Blumhouse is celebrating its 15th anniversary with a bang by re-releasing the 2022 hit M3GAN in theaters. This move comes just ahead of the sequel's release and includes some innovative, yet controversial, new features that encourage smartphone use during the screenings.
As part of their Halfway to Halloween initiative, Shudder is hosting one-night-only screenings of M3GAN, along with Ma and Annabelle, enhanced with Meta's "Movie Mate" technology. This feature lets audience members interact directly with M3GAN through a chatbot and access exclusive content in real-time via second screen capabilities.
"Movie Mate is exclusively available to moviegoers in theaters and can be activated by sending a direct message to the Instagram account @M3GAN," Blumhouse detailed in a statement to Variety."The technology is designed to enhance the 'second screen' viewing experience, building anticipation for the upcoming release of M3GAN 2.0 on June 27," the studio added.
Fans can look forward to sneak peeks, exclusive messages from the films' directors and talent, and surprise appearances in select markets. While this approach may challenge the traditional theatrical experience, its impact on fans remains to be seen. Personally, I hope this doesn't become a standard for regular screenings.
The special M3GAN screening is scheduled for April 30 across various theaters nationwide, followed by Annabelle on May 7, and Ma on May 14. M3GAN 2.0 will premiere in U.S. theaters on June 27.
