Shift Up's Goddess of Victory: NIKKE collaboration with Neon Genesis Evangelion fell short of expectations, according to a recent interview with the game's producer. The August 2024 crossover event, featuring Rei, Asuka, Mari, and Misato, failed to resonate with players despite attempts to stay true to the original character designs.
Where Did It Go Wrong?
The initial designs created by Shift Up, while appealing to the Nikke aesthetic, were deemed too provocative by the Evangelion creators. Subsequent modifications, while satisfying the licensors, lacked the visual appeal to excite the player base. The resulting costumes, particularly Asuka's gacha skin, were seen as too similar to her base model, offering insufficient incentive for players to spend resources.
Player Feedback:
The underwhelming designs weren't the only issue. The limited-time nature of the characters and costumes, combined with a lack of significant visual flair, discouraged spending. Players, who appreciate Nikke's distinctive style and compelling narrative, felt the collaboration diluted the game's identity. The event itself also felt drawn-out and uninspired.
Shift Up acknowledged the negative feedback and committed to improving future collaborations. Hopefully, this will translate to more engaging and exciting content in the months to come. Both Neon Genesis Evangelion and Goddess of Victory: NIKKE are available on the Google Play Store.
