Comparing graphics cards from Nvidia and AMD can be tricky due to their different architectures. Nvidia's CUDA cores and AMD's Shading Units, while similar in function, aren't directly comparable in numbers alone.
The AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT boasts 64 RDNA 4 compute units, each containing 64 shader units, totaling 4,096. It also features 128 AI Accelerators and 64 RT Accelerators, paired with 16GB of GDDR6 memory on a 256-bit bus. This setup is well-suited for modern gaming, though it might be pushed to its limits at 4K in the future.
On the other hand, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti also comes with 16GB of memory, but it utilizes the faster GDDR7 on a 256-bit bus, offering higher bandwidth. It's equipped with 70 Streaming Multiprocessors, comprising 8,960 CUDA Cores. Despite the RTX 5070 Ti's impressive specs, its performance doesn't always outshine the RX 9070 XT. Both cards excel at 4K and are among the best for 1440p gaming.
In my review of the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT, I anticipated it would lag behind the RTX 5070 Ti, especially in ray-traced games like Cyberpunk 2077. Surprisingly, the RX 9070 XT stayed close, often within a few frames of the pricier RTX 5070 Ti.
The RTX 5070 Ti does pull ahead in some titles, such as Total War: Warhammer 3, where it achieves 87fps at 4K, compared to the RX 9070 XT's 76fps. However, the RX 9070 XT averaged 2% faster overall, a significant achievement given its 21% lower theoretical cost.
