Nintendo has shed light on the compatibility of its newly unveiled GameCube controller for the Nintendo Switch 2, cautioning gamers about potential "issues" when using it with contemporary Switch 2 titles. This clarification came after the controller was introduced during the recent 60-minute Nintendo Direct. Initially, the fine print indicated that the controller was designed specifically for "Nintendo GameCube" games available in the Nintendo Switch Online retro library, excluding other Switch 2 games.

In their latest statement, Nintendo reiterated that the GameCube controller is primarily intended for the retro GameCube games within the Nintendo Switch Online service. They acknowledged that while it might be possible to use the controller with other Switch 2 games, players could encounter "some issues" due to the absence of "all the buttons and features" found on more modern controllers. Nintendo also emphasized that the GameCube controller is exclusively compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2 system and not with the original Nintendo Switch.

"The Nintendo GameCube controller is designed for use with the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection of games and is an optional way to play those games," Nintendo stated to Nintendo Life. "Since it doesn’t have all the buttons and features found in other controllers that can be used with the Nintendo Switch 2 system, there may be some issues when playing other games. The Nintendo GameCube controller can only be used on Nintendo Switch 2 and is not compatible with Nintendo Switch."

The introduction of the GameCube collection marks a significant expansion of the Nintendo Switch Online library, bringing a host of classic titles from the early 2000s to subscribers. Launch titles include fan favorites such as The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Soulcalibur 2. Looking ahead, the library is set to grow with anticipated additions like Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Strikers, and Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, among others.
