Ubisoft Restarts Project Maverick Development: Rumor

The extraction shooter set in the Far Cry universe, which is set to take place in the rugged landscapes of Alaska, has undergone a complete reboot, according to a report from Insider Gaming. Originally known as Project Maverick, the game started as a planned multiplayer expansion for Far Cry 7. However, after an internal review, Ubisoft decided to pivot significantly. Despite receiving positive feedback from both employees and testers, Ubisoft's management chose to redirect most of the resources to Project Blackbird, which is Far Cry 7. The final blow to the multiplayer component came with the reassignment of the technical team to other projects.

The project's development has now been transferred to Ubisoft Sherbrooke, a studio renowned for its expertise in development support. Almost the entire original team that was working on Project Maverick has been reassigned to focus on the upcoming Far Cry installment.

According to insider Tom Henderson (as of mid-December 2024), Far Cry 7 is set to plunge players into a world filled with tension and desperation, where time becomes the ultimate enemy. The narrative centers on the protagonist's mission to rescue their kidnapped family from a sinister cult that's conducting chilling experiments with hallucinogens on animals and children. Players will race against the clock, striving to save their loved ones within a tight 72-hour in-game window, which translates to 24 real-time hours. This time constraint is a core gameplay mechanic that injects urgency and intensity into every moment of play.

A unique feature of Far Cry 7 will be a timer displayed on the protagonist's wristwatch, serving as a constant reminder of the ticking clock. This element is designed to escalate the sense of urgency and pressure, compelling players to make rapid and strategic decisions. Far Cry 7 is poised to offer a gripping experience where every second is precious, and every decision carries weighty consequences.
