DC Studios head James Gunn has a clear message for fans: the rumors are false. The executive has officially confirmed that the upcoming Waller TV series remains in active development.
Gunn recently addressed the speculation on Threads, responding to a fan who questioned whether reports of Waller being redeveloped as a Checkmate series were accurate. He offered a simple, one-word confirmation: "yes."
Another fan then sought further clarification, asking directly, "So Waller is still happening?" Once again, Gunn replied with a definitive "yes."
This firm confirmation from the DC Universe boss is welcome news, especially after he recently acknowledged the project had faced some challenges during development. "Waller has experienced a few setbacks, to be honest," Gunn explained during a DC Studios press event with co-chair Peter Safran in February.
Beyond that, specific details about the show remain limited. Waller was first announced as part of the DCU slate in January 2023, described as a Peacemaker spinoff that would follow the consequences of Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks)—daughter of Viola Davis' Amanda Waller—exposing Task Force X at the end of Season 1. However, the 2023 Hollywood strikes disrupted those plans, requiring the creative team to revise the storyline to align with the new DCU timeline, which significantly delayed production.
The series is being developed by Watchmen writer Christal Henry and Doom Patrol creator Jeremy Carver, though little additional information is currently available to the public. Still, Gunn's recent confirmation marks significant progress for the series, which fans hope to see released next year. All signs now point in a positive direction.
