Skyblivion — the highly anticipated fan recreation of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion developed by volunteer modding group TESRenewal — has released its first major update since April's The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered launch, reconfirming their 2025 release target.

This ambitious project recreates Oblivion using Skyrim's Creation Engine, transforming what began as a simple conversion into a comprehensive remake featuring overhauled mechanics and original content. The decade-long development was first highlighted by IGN in 2021 through developer interviews.

Despite speculation that Bethesda's official remaster might overshadow their efforts, the Skyblivion team maintains a positive relationship with the studio, describing them as "very supportive." When rumors surfaced about potential competition, the developers clarified their collaborative dynamic, noting Bethesda even provided the team with complimentary copies of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.

The latest development update directly addresses fan questions about Skyblivion's continued relevance post-remaster: "Our project represents a complete reimagining that modernizes Oblivion far beyond graphical upgrades," the team explained in their new showcase video. "We've redesigned every location, dungeon, and gameplay system while respecting the original vision. Though we can't announce a specific date yet, we're on track for our 2025 release."

As PC Gamer highlighted, the 15-minute presentation showcases exciting additions including the reconstruction of Sutch, the legendary eighth city cut from the original game. Players will also encounter a completely reimagined version of the coastal town Anvil and its surrounding regions.

"After a decade of development, we're nearing completion of our vision to recreate Oblivion using Skyrim's engine," the update continues. "Our 2025 release will feature the Gold Coast region, multiple Oblivion realms, enhanced character customization, and numerous other improvements."

Talented modders familiar with the Creation Engine can still apply to join the project.

In IGN's review of the official remaster, we scored the game 8/10, praising it as "a brilliant refresh of a genre-defining RPG that preserves the original's charm while addressing many technical limitations."
