2XKO Aims to Reinvent Tag-Team Fighting

Riot Games' highly anticipated 2XKO (formerly Project L) is set to revolutionize the tag-team fighting game genre. This innovative title introduces a unique four-player cooperative mode, "Duo Play," where two players team up to control a single champion each, facing off against another two-player team. This departs from traditional tag-team mechanics where a single player manages both characters.

A Fresh Take on Tag-Team Combat

EVO 2024 showcased 2XKO's gameplay, revealing a dynamic system where matches involve two teams of two, each with a "Point" character and an "Assist." The Assist isn't merely a passive backup; they actively contribute through three core mechanics: Assist Actions (special moves initiated by the Point), Handshake Tag (instant role swap), and Dynamic Save (interruption of enemy combos). Unlike some tag fighters, both players must be knocked out to end a round, leading to extended and strategic matches. Even defeated champions remain active as Assists, providing tactical support.

Strategic Synergy with "Fuses"

Beyond character selection, 2XKO introduces "Fuses," customizable synergy options that significantly alter team playstyles. The playable demo featured five Fuses, each offering unique advantages: Pulse (rapid attack combos), Fury (increased damage below 40% health), Freestyle (double Handshake Tags), Double Down (combined ultimate moves), and 2X Assist (enhanced Assist abilities). Game designer Daniel Maniago highlighted the Fuse system's role in amplifying player expression and creating devastating synchronized combos.

A Roster of Familiar Faces (and Some Missing Ones)

The Alpha Lab Playtest showcased six playable champions: Braum, Ahri, Darius, Ekko, Yasuo, and Illaoi, each retaining their signature League of Legends abilities. Notable absences include Jinx and Katarina, previously featured in promotional material. While not included in the initial playtest, developers confirmed their future inclusion.

Alpha Lab Playtest and Beyond

2XKO, a free-to-play title launching on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 in 2025, is currently accepting registrations for its Alpha Lab Playtest (August 8-19). This innovative take on the tag-team fighting genre promises a fresh, exciting, and highly strategic competitive experience.
