The writer of the Wesley Snipes Blade trilogy, David S. Goyer, has expressed his readiness to assist Marvel chief Kevin Feige in reviving Mahershala Ali’s stalled MCU reboot of the iconic vampire hunter. Despite being announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019 with a planned release for November of the current year, the project has faced numerous hurdles and delays, leaving fans in limbo.
Recent updates from those involved in the project have shed light on its uncertain future. Rapper and artist Flying Lotus, who was set to contribute music to the film, shared on X/Twitter that the project had fallen through, expressing doubts about its revival. Costume designer Ruth E. Carter, during an appearance on The John Campea Show, confirmed her involvement in designing costumes for a 1920s-set Blade, a setting that promised unique aesthetic possibilities. Actor Delroy Lindo, who was initially attached to star alongside Ali, revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the project's collapse was unexpected, despite initial enthusiasm from Marvel about his input and the inclusive direction of the film.
Blade has seen a carousel of directors, including Yann Demange and Bassam Tariq, none of whom have remained with the project. In an interview with ScreenRant, Goyer expressed his confusion and eagerness to contribute to the reboot, stating, "I would...I’ve always loved the character and I love him. I’ve been sitting on the sidelines wondering, ‘What in the world is going on? Why is it taking so long?’ Because I’m a huge Marvel fan myself, and I’ve just been totally puzzled."
Seven months ago, Blade was removed from Marvel’s release schedule, and no new date has been announced. However, Kevin Feige reassured fans in an interview with Omelete in November 2024 that Marvel remains committed to bringing Blade to the MCU, emphasizing their dedication to the character and Mahershala Ali's interpretation of him.
In other Marvel news, the film Deadpool & Wolverine, which included a cameo by Wesley Snipes reprising his role as Blade, was a massive success, grossing $1.3 billion globally. Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds praised the original Blade films for paving the way for the superhero genre, calling Snipes' character "Marvel Daddy" and advocating for a send-off film similar to Hugh Jackman's Logan. Reynolds also hinted at his involvement in an early-stage project to bring a Deadpool and X-Men ensemble film to life, where Deadpool would share the spotlight with other X-Men characters.
