Crysis 4 Development Paused, Crytek Cuts Up to 60 Jobs

Crytek recently announced a round of layoffs impacting 60 out of its 400 employees. In a tweet, the company acknowledged that although their game "Hunt: Showdown" continues to grow, financial sustainability requires adjustments. Following the suspension of "Crysis 4" development in late 2024, efforts were made to reallocate resources toward "Hunt: Showdown," aiming to reduce costs. However, these measures ultimately led to unavoidable layoffs, affecting 15% of the workforce.

These cuts spanned across various departments within Crytek, including development teams and shared services. Affected employees will receive severance packages. Below is the full statement from Crytek founder Avni Yerli:

Similar to many of our industry peers, we face challenging market conditions. Regrettably, we must announce layoffs impacting approximately 15% of our 400 employees. These changes affect both development teams and shared services.

This was not an easy decision, as we value the dedication of our talented staff. After pausing the next "Crysis" game development in Q3 2024, we attempted to transition developers to "Hunt: Showdown 1896." Despite its growth, Crytek cannot maintain operations as previously structured while staying financially viable. Even after cost-cutting measures, layoffs became necessary for progress. Employees impacted will receive severance packages and career support.

We remain confident in Crytek's future. With "Hunt: Showdown 1896," we have a robust gaming service and remain dedicated to its evolution. We will continue enhancing "Hunt: Showdown 1896" with compelling content and advance our CRYENGINE strategy.

Previously, it was reported that Crytek was working on a battle royale-inspired project titled "Crysis Next," which was later shelved in favor of "Crysis 4" prior to its January 2022 announcement.

Crysis is a renowned first-person sci-fi shooter series celebrated for its cutting-edge graphics, innovative nanosuit mechanics, and open-world gameplay. The original game, released in 2007, became a benchmark for PC performance due to its demanding requirements, spawning the popular phrase, "But can it run Crysis?" The latest mainline entry, "Crysis 3," launched in 2013. Recent years saw remastered versions of the originals, though updates on "Crysis 4" have been scarce since its initial announcement.
