Fallout: New Vegas Devs Want to Work on Obscure Series

Obsidian Entertainment's CEO, Feargus Urquhart, has publicly expressed a strong desire to develop a game based on Microsoft's Shadowrun franchise. This revelation comes during an interview where he was asked about his preferred non-Fallout Microsoft IP. While currently occupied with projects like Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2, Urquhart's enthusiasm for Shadowrun is undeniable. He described it as "super cool" and explicitly named it as his top choice from a list of Microsoft properties.

This interest isn't surprising, given Obsidian's history of successfully developing sequels within established franchises, including their celebrated work on Fallout: New Vegas. Urquhart himself has previously commented on the advantages of working within existing RPG worlds, highlighting the potential for ongoing narrative expansion. His personal history with Shadowrun, including owning multiple editions of the tabletop RPG, further underscores his passion for the property.

The Shadowrun franchise boasts a rich history, originating as a tabletop RPG in 1989 and spawning numerous video game adaptations. While Harebrained Schemes has released several Shadowrun games recently, including a 2022 compilation of remastered titles, the community is eager for a brand-new, original entry. The last standalone game, Shadowrun: Hong Kong, launched in 2015, leaving a significant gap in the series. The potential for Obsidian to develop a new Shadowrun game represents a significant opportunity to revitalize this beloved cyberpunk-fantasy world. Should Obsidian secure the license, fans can anticipate a high-quality addition to the franchise, helmed by a studio with a proven track record in RPG development.
