In a recent interview with Famitsu on April 24, Sucker Punch unveiled exciting details about their upcoming standalone sequel to the Ghost series. Ghost of Yotei builds upon the success of the critically acclaimed PlayStation exclusive Ghost of Tsushima by introducing new layers to both its gameplay and narrative.

Creative Director Jason Cornell highlighted the game's focus on freedom, stating that Ghost of Yotei will feature the most expansive maps and the greatest freedom in gameplay that the studio has ever created. Players will have the liberty to explore and locate the Yotei Six at their own pace, embracing the challenge of seeking justice for them.

Last week, the release date for Ghost of Yotei on the PS5 was announced, along with a captivating new trailer titled "The Onryō’s List." This trailer provided glimpses into the story and gameplay, introducing fans to the protagonist, Atsu, and her quest for vengeance against the Yotei Six.

More Melee Weapons

In addition to the expansive freedom in exploration, Ghost of Yotei also offers players a broader range of melee weapons. The latest trailer sparked speculation among fans, which was confirmed by Sucker Punch's Creative Director Nate Fox. Alongside the iconic samurai sword, players can now wield the odachi (Japanese long sword), a chain sickle, double swords, and a spear.

Fox emphasized that while the sword remains a central weapon, players can learn to use other weapons from various teachers and masters encountered throughout the story and open world. Unlike its predecessor, where samurai honor was a core theme, Ghost of Yotei features Atsu, who is not bound by the same honor code. This allows for a more versatile combat style, where Atsu can pick up and use any available weapon on the battlefield, including those dropped by defeated enemies.

Set in 1603 around Mt. Yotei in Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido), Ghost of Yotei offers a unique backdrop that blends a lawless environment with the natural beauty and inherent dangers of the region. Creative Director Jason Cornell described Ezo as a "stage that balances a lawless environment with no security yet and an environment where danger lurks in the beauty of nature."

The game will also feature a respectful representation of the Ainu culture and its people, an indigenous group native to northern Japan. The developers conducted extensive research in Hokkaido, visiting museums and consulting with experts to ensure an authentic portrayal. Cornell was inspired by Hokkaido's stunning landscapes, motivating the team to recreate this setting for players worldwide.
