Back in early April, fans of the Nintendo Switch 2 were buzzing about the mention of variable refresh rate (VRR) on the system's informational pages, which mysteriously vanished soon after. Now, Nintendo has stepped in to clarify the situation regarding VRR on the Nintendo Switch 2.

In a statement to NintendoLife, Nintendo addressed the initial confusion: "Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only. The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologize for the error." When pressed about potential VRR support in docked mode via a future firmware update, Nintendo simply stated, "We have nothing to announce on this topic."

This means that while the Switch 2 will offer VRR as an option in handheld mode, those connecting their console to a TV won't have access to this feature at launch. The clarification comes after weeks of speculation and confusion, as the VRR mention was spotted and then quickly removed. Digital Foundry contributor Oliver Mackenzie documented how references to VRR gradually disappeared from various sites.

While the lack of VRR in docked mode at launch may disappoint some fans, there's still hope for future updates. Sony, for instance, introduced VRR support to PS5 consoles after their initial release, suggesting that Nintendo might follow a similar path with the Switch 2.

In other news related to the Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo has revealed a lineup of games set to receive free performance upgrades, including titles like Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Additionally, Nintendo of America's president, Doug Bowser, has reassured fans that the company plans to have enough Switch 2 units available to meet demand throughout the holiday season.
