PC players of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered encountered unexpected problems following a surprise update released today. Bethesda has acknowledged the issues and assured players that a fix is in the works.
The update, deployed by Virtuos without prior notice or patch notes, left many players confused about its purpose. While some continued playing without noticing significant changes, others reported severe performance degradation. A vocal subset of the community quickly took to social media to express their frustrations:
Yoooo why would @virtuosgames push an update to Oblivion Remastered that removes all upscaling right before the games first weekend?!!?No DLSS
No FSRRIP playable performance....

A Reddit user highlighted the issue with upscaling settings, stating, "Can't change the upscaling methods anymore. It's set to ‘off’ and while the arrows are clickable nothing happens. So I closed the game, disabled fluid motion in the NVidia app (was testing something before the patch came) and started the game again. Loading times for my save are long again and still can't change upscaling settings lol. Now I am stuck with 40-60 fps in high settings with a 5800X3D and a 5080. Nice patch :D"
The impact varies among players, with some experiencing no changes, while others face significant framerate drops and locked upscaling settings. This is particularly frustrating as Oblivion Remastered’s first weekend approaches.
Bethesda addressed the concerns on their official support page, explaining that the update was meant for "a few backend tweaks and nothing directly impacting gameplay." However, it seems the issues primarily affect players who purchased Oblivion Remastered through the Microsoft Store, particularly with their upscaling and anti-aliasing options.
Bethesda clarified, "Any graphic settings adjusted prior to the Microsoft Store hotfix are still enabled and function normally. However, you will temporarily be unable to adjust those settings due to the issue with the settings UI. The team is taking a look and working out a resolution, we will share more info as soon as we can."
While a timeline for the fix remains unclear, players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S consoles appear unaffected and can continue playing without issues.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was remastered and released for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X | S earlier this week.
