The Nintendo Switch 2 introduces GameChat, a built-in video calling feature that's poised to enhance the social aspect of gaming on the new console. However, setting up GameChat involves a mandatory step: users must verify their identity by providing a phone number to Nintendo. If your Nintendo Account already has a linked phone number, that will be used; otherwise, you'll need to enter a new one. Once submitted, Nintendo will send a verification text message, linking your GameChat activities to that specific number. This measure ensures a more responsible use of the feature.
For users under 16, GameChat remains inaccessible until a parent or guardian uses the Parental Controls app to enable it. In such cases, the adult must also provide their phone number for verification purposes. According to information on Nintendo's website, this requirement extends to all Nintendo Account holders on the Switch 2, even if the console is shared among multiple users. IGN has reached out to Nintendo for further clarification on this policy.
Activating GameChat is straightforward; just press the new 'C' button on the Switch 2 controllers. This allows up to four players to engage in video chats or 24 in group audio calls. Video calls can include broadcasting gameplay and using an optional camera peripheral, marking a significant step for Nintendo in offering real-time communication features.

Digital Foundry recently disclosed the final specs of the Nintendo Switch 2, highlighting concerns among developers about GameChat's impact on system resources. Nintendo offers a testing tool that simulates GameChat's effects on API latency and L3 cache misses, allowing developers to prepare without active sessions. This tool suggests that GameChat might affect game performance, though it's unclear how significant this impact will be. Digital Foundry is keen to observe this further upon the console's release on June 5.
Remember, GameChat will be free to use for the first 10 months after the Switch 2's launch. Post March 31, 2026, a Nintendo Switch Online membership will be required to continue using the feature. Recent updates also include a first look at a Switch 2 game cartridge and reports of Samsung's interest in supplying OLED screens for potential upgrades.
