Bruce Nesmith, the senior game designer behind the original The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, has expressed his awe at Bethesda and Virtuos' work on the Oblivion Remastered. In a recent discussion with VideoGamer, Nesmith marveled at the extensive updates, suggesting that the term "remaster" might not fully capture the scale of the transformation. He emphasized the dedication that went into crafting every detail of Cyrodiil, making the reimagining of the game a surprising and impressive feat.
“I was expecting just a texture update,” Nesmith admitted. “But what they’ve done is a complete overhaul. They’ve redone the animations, revamped the animation system, integrated the Unreal Engine, and even modified the leveling system and user interface. It’s a comprehensive reworking of the entire game.”Despite no prior official announcement from Bethesda, the release of Oblivion Remastered has left fans astounded by the myriad of changes, from subtle visual enhancements to significant gameplay adjustments. New features like a sprint mechanic and alterations to the leveling system have led many, including Nesmith, to view the project more as a remake than a simple remaster. He remarked, “The closest label might be Oblivion 2.0. It’s a staggering amount of remastering, almost deserving of its own category. I’m not sure ‘remaster’ does it justice.”
Nesmith further elaborated on the remaster’s scope, stating, “The closest we can come to categorizing it is Oblivion 2.0.” As the gaming community celebrates the meticulous effort poured into Oblivion Remastered, Bethesda provided insight into their naming decision in a statement released on social media. The studio clarified their goal was not to create a remake but to preserve the cherished experience of Oblivion while updating it for a new audience, imperfections included.
“We know our long-time fans will be excited to return to Oblivion and Cyrodiil,” Bethesda’s statement read. “Yet, we also aim to introduce the game to those who have never experienced it. Your continued support means the world to us. Our hope is that, whether you’re a veteran or a newcomer, stepping out of the Imperial sewer feels like a fresh adventure.”
Oblivion Remastered was unveiled and released as a surprise drop by Bethesda, available now on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can enjoy it without additional cost.
