Hideki Kamiya, the mastermind behind the original Devil May Cry (DMC), has expressed a keen interest in remaking the iconic game. In this article, we delve into Kamiya's vision for a potential DMC remake and how his personal experiences shaped the creation of the original title.
The trend of remaking classic games has seen a surge in recent years, with titles like Final Fantasy VII, Silent Hill 2, and Resident Evil 4 being revisited by their legendary developers. Now, the original Devil May Cry, first released in 2001, might join this prestigious list, as its director, Hideki Kamiya, has voiced his interest in crafting a remake.
In a video posted on his YouTube channel on May 8, Kamiya engaged with fans on the topic of remakes and sequels. When directly asked about his vision for a DMC remake, he responded with enthusiasm, stating, "A remake like that, well, I would like to do that."

Originally intended as Resident Evil 4, Devil May Cry underwent a significant transformation from its initial concept, leading Capcom to launch it as a standalone title in 2001. Reflecting on its creation nearly 25 years later, Kamiya revealed a poignant personal story behind the game. He shared that in 2000, following a painful breakup, he channeled his emotions into what would become DMC, using his heartache as a creative catalyst.

Kamiya admits he rarely revisits his completed games, including DMC. However, when he occasionally encounters gameplay clips, he recognizes the game's age and its design elements from 24 years ago. If given the opportunity to remake DMC, Kamiya's approach would be to rebuild it from scratch, leveraging modern technology and contemporary game design principles.
While the project remains a distant possibility, Kamiya's creative gears only turn when a project is actively in development. Should the time come for a DMC remake, he confidently asserts, "But if the time comes— I’ll come up with something. That’s what I do."
Beyond DMC, Kamiya's interest in remakes extends to another of his creations, Viewtiful Joe. With these insights, fans of Kamiya’s work eagerly anticipate the potential revival of these cherished titles in the form of modern remakes.
