Wuchang: Fallen Feathers has launched on Steam with over 114,000 concurrent players, marking one of the most successful debuts for a non-FromSoftware Soulslike title to date.
It currently ranks as the eighth most-played game on Steam by concurrent player count, breaking the 100,000 concurrent player milestone and reaching a peak of 114,132 players in the last 24 hours. For comparison, SteamDB data shows that Lies of P achieved a peak of just over 30,000 players, Lords of the Fallen reached 43,075, and The First Berserker: Khazan peaked just below 33,000.
While concurrent player numbers shouldn't be the only measure of a game's success, they provide a useful starting point—even though they don't include players on other platforms.
Despite its strong launch-day performance, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers initially received an 'Overwhelmingly Negative' user review rating on Steam, which has since improved to 'Mostly Negative.' Players frequently cite "extremely awful performance," a "completely lifeless" protagonist, and "clunky" combat and gameplay. At the time of writing, only 21% of the more than 6,500 Steam reviews are positive.
"I really wanted to give this game a fair shot. I was excited for it, but after seeing the mostly negative reviews and verifying the concerns, I have to agree," wrote one reviewer. "The game suffers from severe performance issues. I tried to push through, hoping the gameplay would compensate, but unfortunately, I couldn't fully experience the combat. I fought the tutorial boss and cleared a few enemy camps—there were moments of fun during the boss battle—but persistent performance problems overshadowed everything."
"UE5 games tend to be a hit or miss performance-wise, and this one, unfortunately, is a miss—at least on my setup," added another. "That's exactly why this game needs a free demo."
Not all feedback is negative, however. "I'm one of the lucky ones—the game runs smoothly on my system. No crashes, stuttering, or slideshow combat," shared a happier reviewer. "And that makes one thing crystal clear: Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is being unfairly criticized by players with underpowered PCs and no optimization knowledge."
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is a Soulslike action RPG set in the land of Shu during the turbulent late Ming Dynasty. You take on the role of a mysterious warrior afflicted by a strange feather-borne disease, uncovering dark secrets and battling supernatural foes in an ancient empire on the brink of collapse.
"Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is another excellent addition to the growing Soulslike genre, featuring tight combat, clever level design, an impressive skill tree, and intimidating bosses," IGN noted in its review, which scored the game 8/10. "Just be prepared for dramatic difficulty swings and a few annoying 'gotcha!' ambushes."
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers was released earlier today, July 24, 2025, for PS5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Microsoft also added it to Game Pass on day one for subscribers to the Ultimate tier.
