Kojima to Direct Movie After PlayStation's Physint in 5-6 Years

Hideo Kojima's spiritual successor to Metal Gear, Physint, remains approximately "five or six years" from launch.

The legendary game designer revealed to Le Film Francais that his cinematic ambitions must wait until after completing his first "action espionage" project since his high-profile departure from Konami in 2015.

"Since leaving Konami, I've received numerous serious proposals to develop games through my independent studio," Kojima explained through ResetEra user Red Kong XIX's translation. "Alongside Death Stranding 2, we're developing Physint. That project will require about five or six more years.

"Perhaps afterward, I could finally pursue film direction," Kojima continued. "Cinema raised me. Directing would essentially be my homage. Also, considering my age, I'd prefer exploring this while still relatively young!"

PlayStation Studios chief Herman Hulst first unveiled Physint in January 2024, though details have remained scarce. Notably, Kojima initially suggested it would blend gaming with cinema, later clarifying on X/Twitter that it represents "next-level 'Digital Entertainment'" combining cinematic-quality visuals, narrative, themes, casting, performances, aesthetics, and sound design.

Physint joins Kojima Productions' diverse slate including Death Stranding 2 and the Xbox-exclusive OD - a new IP featuring actress Hunter Schafer and filmmaker Jordan Peele. The studio also contributes to A24's Death Stranding film adaptation.

Death Stranding 2: On The Beach launches June 26, with star Norman Reedus confirming to IGN he would "of course" reprise his role in the planned movie adaptation.

Following revelations about abandoned game concepts - including a "Forgetting Game" where protagonist abilities degrade during player inactivity - Kojima recently disclosed archiving future project ideas on a USB drive for his team to potentially develop posthumously.
